Commissioning is about investing in solutions that are designed with communities, not simply delivered to them.
Rather than delivering services ourselves, we invest in providers and initiatives that are deeply connected to their communities and understand the strengths, aspirations and realities of the whānau they walk alongside every day.
Through these partnerships, Kaiwhiriwhiri work alongside whānau to identify what matters most to them, connect them with the right support, and help create pathways towards the future they want for themselves.
Every whānau is different. That is why commissioning is not about applying the same solution to everyone. It is about listening first, building on strengths, and supporting approaches that reflect the unique circumstances, aspirations and potential of each whānau.
What is commissioning?
Whānau Ora was founded on the belief that lasting change happens when whānau are trusted, supported and empowered to determine their own futures.
That vision was championed by Dame Kahurangi Tariana Turia, who said:
"We are at the starting point of major transformation in the way services are designed and delivered, contracts are arranged and the way providers work together. But most of all we are at the starting point of our cultural transformation celebrating the power and potential of a whānau-centred approach which will enable our people to flourish."
Her words continue to guide the Whānau Ora movement today.
At Rangitāmiro, we see commissioning as more than an investment in programmes. It is an investment in people, relationships and communities. It is about strengthening the capability of providers, supporting Kaiwhiriwhiri, backing innovative ideas, and creating opportunities for whānau to thrive in ways that are meaningful to them.
